The next day some of us went to the Carter House where the Battle of Franklin took place on Nov. 30, 1864. The house was located just inside the center of the Federal defensive perimeter.
Much of the fighting took place in the Carter House yard and east to the Carter cotton gin. It was savage and bloody. There were casualties for hundreds of yards to the east and west of the Carter House. The fighting lasted 5 hours with 9,500 casualties - 2,000 dead, 6,500 wounded and 1,000 missing.
Above is the cotton gin with the original bullet holes after the battle.
